- Victor relies a lot on his mare, Quince. What animals are in your life? Do they help you? Animals have helped humans for thousands of years. Can you name any animals which in the past have helped farmers? Sailors? Miners? Do any of them still help us? Are there other types of helping animals now? (Suggestions: sheep dogs, oxen, horses, ferrets, cats on ships, canaries in mines, seeing eye dogs, companion dogs for the disabled, riding for the disabled.)
- Hand lotions come in lots of different types. Research the ingredients in two types of hand lotion. Are there any ingredients which are the same? Make your own with sorbolene and an essential oil for fragrance.
- Carruthers was invented because I needed a flying animal which could camouflage itself in the type of pine forest that Victor was riding through, and I thought it would be more fun to have an orange animal than a browny-greeen one. Find some pictures of pine forests and see if you can see any patches of lichen on the trees or rocks. Draw a picture of Carruthers high up in a tree. How would he hold on? Would he hang from a branch or cling to the trunk? Which would be better camouflage?
- Imagine that you are Valerian and have been imprisoned by the enchanter. Write a letter home to your parents explaining what has happened and how you are spending your time. Reread Chapter 7 for clues about what Valerian does with her time.
- There are words used in Victor's Quest which you might not know. Look up serendipity, dolorous, ferocious. Serendipity used to be the name of a place (Sri Lanka, also known once as Ceylon). Find Sri Lanka on a map.
