I’m very pleased and excited to announce that Victor’s Challenge has won the 2009 Aurealis Award for Best Children’s Short Fiction/Illustrated Work! Thanks to Kim Gamble, the wonderful illustrator of the Victor books, and to all the people at Walker Books. Especial thanks to the Aurealis team who have worked very VERY hard to make the awards one of the highlights of the Australian literary year.

Aurealis in Brisbane

As Victor’s Challenge has been shortlisted for an Aurealis Award, I will be in Brisbane this weekend for the awards ceremony. Along with other authors (like Justine Larbalestier, Scott Westerfeld and Sean Williams), I’ll be chatting and signing books at Pulp Fiction Books in Anzac Arcade, Edwards St, Brisbane on Saturday. I’m scheduled to be there at 2.30, but since there are so many great authors turning up during the day, I’ll probably be there much earlier! Come along and see me!

Book signing and Christmas wishes

I will be at Top Ryde (Sydney) Angus & Robertson bookshop (in the new mall) on Tuesday, 22nd December, at 11am to sign books - you can bring any pre-loved ones along and I’d be delighted to sign those too! Also, check out my post as guest blogger at graspingforthewind.com where I talk about all the things an author does apart from writing!

Year 3 Jacaranda at Santa Maria del Monte gave me a great idea for a story. What if the erasing circle on the smartboard came off and started erasing the real world?

Singleton Library

On Friday, I workshopped with a great bunch of kids from St Catherine’s at Singleton. Some terrifically imaginative stories were started… the half hobgoblin girl idea is still bubbling away somewhere… who knows, there might be a story later. If there is, I’ll dedicate it to the boys who came up with the concept!

Lake Eyre

Pelicans on the lake - they come from thousands of kilometres away!

I am writing a non-fiction picture book about Lake Eyre for Walker Books, and I’ve just come back from a wonderful, invigorating trip to the centre of Australia, where Lake Eyre is filling with water from the Queensland floods. The Lake is normally dry and fills only once every ten years or so. Not only did we go to Lake Eyre, but also to Broken Hill, Coober Pedy, Port Augusta, and the Woomera Rocket Range!

I love the desert, and this trip was inspiring. The working title for the book is The Dreaming Lake. I have lots more photos and am happy to send some to anyone doing a project on Lake Eyre.

The launch of my new Victor book - Victor’s Challenge (Walker Books, $12.95) - was great fun.

Cerdon College in Merrylands invited me to launch the book there, and kids from lots of other schools came too. There were even students from my old primary school, St Mary’s at Rydalmere.
